They can renew themselves and turn into specialised cells such as blood, bone or nerve cells. Medicine uses them in two broad ways: replacing a diseased blood and immune system through a transplant, and in research on repairing or protecting damaged tissue.

What Is Established

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), often called bone marrow transplant, is a standard treatment for conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, thalassemia, aplastic anaemia and certain inherited blood and immune disorders. It is performed in many Indian hospitals under well-defined medical protocols.

What Is Still Investigational

Using stem cells for other conditions, for example orthopaedic, neurological, eye, liver or kidney problems, is still under study. The National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, 2017 from ICMR and the Department of Biotechnology classify such use as investigational, meaning it should take place within approved clinical research with ethics oversight. In September 2026 the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also released an advisory on stem cell therapy regulation stressing that routine use is limited to approved indications.

Established vs Investigational at a Glance

Category

Status

What it involves

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for approved indications

Established standard of care

Leukemia, lymphoma, thalassemia, aplastic anaemia, some inherited blood and immune disorders

Other stem cell use (mesenchymal, adipose-derived, cord tissue and similar cells)

Investigational.
