Many families also value the access to specialists and the supportive care available in major cities. Lower cost, however, is never a reason to skip due diligence. Bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a standard therapy for several blood and immune conditions. Using stem cells for most other conditions, including neurological, eye, orthopaedic, liver and kidney problems, is still under research. The National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, 2017 from ICMR and DBT describe such use as investigational, to be carried out within approved research with ethics oversight.

Category

Status

Typical examples

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (bone marrow transplant)

Established standard of care for approved indications

Leukemia, lymphoma, thalassemia, aplastic anaemia

Mesenchymal and other cell-based approaches

Investigational. In clinical research, mesenchymal stem cells are widely studied because they can be obtained from sources such as bone marrow, fat tissue or umbilical cord tissue and are known for their signalling and supportive effects on surrounding tissue.
