Care is usually built in layers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. Treat the underlying cause<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This gives the best chance of saving vision. Examples include lowering eye pressure in glaucoma, corticosteroids for acute optic neuritis as advised by a neurologist or ophthalmologist, surgery or radiotherapy for a compressing tumour, correcting vitamin deficiencies, stopping a toxic medicine, and controlling diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. Vision rehabilitation<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Low-vision aids, magnifiers, lighting changes and orientation training help many patients use their remaining vision better in daily life.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">4. Research-stage approaches<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because nerve fibres do not regrow naturally, researchers are studying neuroprotective drugs, gene therapy for certain inherited optic neuropathies and cell-based therapies. It may be done only within an approved and monitored clinical trial.<\/li>\n<li>Stem cell products are regulated as new drugs under the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdsco.gov.in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019<\/a> (CDSCO).<\/li>\n<li>After a Supreme Court judgment of 30 January 2026, the Union Health Ministry issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleaseDetail.aspx?PRID=2311179&amp;reg=6&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advisory dated 16 September 2026<\/a> to States and Union Territories. It states that stem cell therapy can be offered as standard care only for disease conditions on the Ministry-approved list.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmc.org.in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Medical Commission<\/a>, in an advisory dated 5 September 2026, said that unauthorised administration, prescription, promotion or advertisement of stem cell therapy beyond approved indications amounts to professional misconduct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Optic nerve atrophy is not an indication for which stem cell therapy is approved as standard care. Anyone considering it should therefore treat it as an experimental option that is legitimate only inside an approved clinical trial, with ethics committee oversight and written informed consent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The risks are real.
