How to Get a Medical Visa for Stem Cell Treatment in India: Step-by-Step Guide

Last updated: 2 November 2026 | Author: Dr. Prashant Tyagi (Stem Cell Biotechnology Specialist, 10+ years) and Dr. B. N. Singh (General Physician, MBBS MS General Surgery, 30+ years)

Planning to travel abroad for treatment is stressful enough without visa confusion. If you are an international patient considering stem cell treatment in India, you will need the right visa before you fly. This guide explains the medical visa process step by step, the documents usually asked for, and the mistakes that cause delays. Visa rules and fees change and differ by nationality, so always confirm the current requirements on the official Government of India portals listed below.

Quick Navigation

Which Visa Do Medical Patients Use?

India offers a dedicated medical visa category for people travelling mainly for treatment. Citizens of many countries can apply online for an e-Medical Visa, while others apply through the Indian embassy, high commission or an authorised visa centre. A tourist visa is not meant for medical treatment, so apply under the medical category from the start.

OptionWho it is forHow it is applied for
e-Medical VisaPatients from countries eligible for the electronic visa schemeOnline application on the official Indian visa portal
e-Medical Attendant VisaFamily members or companions accompanying the patientOnline, linked to the patient’s application
Regular Medical VisaPatients not eligible for the e-visa, or needing a longer stayIndian mission or authorised visa centre in your country

Eligibility lists, stay limits and the number of entries are set by the Government of India and may be updated. Check the official Indian Visa Online portal and the Ministry of External Affairs for the current position.

Before You Apply: Confirm the Treatment Plan

The visa application is easier when the treatment plan is clear. Before booking anything:

  1. Share your medical reports for review. Our expert opinion service looks at your reports and tells you honestly whether treatment is suitable. Stem cell therapy is investigational for most conditions, and we say so openly.
  2. Get the plan in writing: the proposed protocol, the expected length of stay, an itemised cost estimate and the follow-up schedule.
  3. Request an invitation or appointment letter from the treating hospital. Most visa applications need it.
  4. Tell your home doctor. Fitness to travel is important, especially with mobility or heart and lung conditions.

You can read how the process is arranged for overseas patients on our page about the medical visa process for international patients and our medical tourism overview.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Check your eligibility: on the official portal, confirm whether your nationality can use the e-Medical Visa.
  2. Collect documents: passport, photograph, hospital letter and medical records (see the checklist below). Scan them in the format the portal asks for.
  3. Fill in the online form: enter details exactly as they appear in your passport. Mismatched names or dates are a frequent cause of rejection.
  4. Upload documents and pay the fee: fees depend on nationality and visa type. Keep the payment receipt.
  5. Wait for approval: you will receive an authorisation by email. Do not book non-refundable travel until it is approved.
  6. Print the approval: carry a printed copy along with your passport and hospital letter.
  7. Apply for attendant visas: companions apply separately, referring to the patient’s application.
  8. Book flights and accommodation: arrange these only after the visa is confirmed. We can help with accommodation near the hospital.

Documents Checklist

DocumentNotes
PassportValid for the period required by current rules, with blank pages for stamps
Recent passport-style photographMeeting the portal’s size and background requirements
Hospital letterOn the hospital’s letterhead, confirming the patient’s name, condition and planned treatment
Medical reportsDiagnosis summary, scans and test results, ideally in English
Proof of fundsSometimes requested; keep a bank statement or similar ready
Return or onward ticketMay be asked for on arrival
Travel insuranceNot always mandatory, but strongly advised

Attendants and Family Members

A limited number of companions can usually travel on attendant visas. The attendant’s visa is tied to the patient’s, so the patient’s application should be completed first. If a child or a person with limited mobility is travelling, an attendant is strongly recommended. Plan wheelchair assistance with the airline in advance.

Timing and Validity

Apply early, but not so early that the visa expires before your treatment dates. The online e-visa has a set window before arrival in which you can apply, a fixed validity and a limit on stay and entries. Because these numbers can change, check them on the official portal rather than relying on a blog post. If your plan needs a longer stay or follow-up visits, ask the hospital and the issuing authority about extensions or a regular medical visa.

On Arrival and During Your Stay

  • Arrive at an airport permitted for your visa type, and carry printed copies of everything.
  • Keep your hospital letter and reports in hand luggage, not checked bags.
  • Notify the hospital of your arrival time so someone can receive you.
  • If your stay may exceed the limits of your visa category, check with the Bureau of Immigration about registration and extensions.
  • Arrange follow-up care in your home country, and read our post-treatment care guidance before you fly back.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying for a tourist visa and then seeking treatment
  • Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is approved
  • Name or passport number mismatches between documents
  • No hospital letter, or a letter that does not name the treating facility
  • Using unofficial websites or agents that charge extra for the e-visa. Always check the portal address carefully.
  • Not planning a buffer for delays, or for any extra days the doctors may advise

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a medical visa to get stem cell treatment in India?

If you are travelling mainly for treatment, the medical visa category is the correct one. Check with the issuing authority for your case.

Can I apply before my treatment plan is final?

It is better to wait until your reports are reviewed and the hospital letter is issued. That avoids applying for a visa you may not need.

Is stem cell therapy approved for my condition?

For most conditions it is investigational and not a guaranteed treatment. We explain the evidence, risks and limits in writing before you decide to travel.

How many people can travel with me?

The number of attendant visas allowed is set by the government. Check the current rule on the official portal.

Who can I contact for help?

Reach our international patient team through the contact page, or see our FAQ page.

Final Checklist

  • Have my reports been reviewed, and do I have a written plan?
  • Do I know that the treatment is investigational, with no guaranteed result?
  • Have I checked visa rules on the official government portal?
  • Do I have the hospital letter, passport and photographs ready?
  • Have attendants applied for their visas?
  • Is my travel booked only after approval?
  • Have I told my home doctor and arranged follow-up care?
