Retinitis pigmentosa treatment in India is mostly about slowing the impact of the disease, treating complications and supporting independence, because most forms have no cure today. RP is a group of inherited retinal disorders that gradually reduce night vision and side vision. This guide explains what is established, what is being studied, and how to evaluate stem cell offers carefully.

What Is Retinitis Pigmentosa?
In retinitis pigmentosa the retina’s rod cells, and later cone cells, slowly stop working. It can be caused by changes in more than 100 genes and may be inherited in dominant, recessive or X-linked patterns, or occur without family history. Some people also have conditions such as Usher syndrome, which affects hearing too.
Stages and Symptoms
- Early: difficulty seeing in dim light and at night
- Middle: narrowing of the visual field (“tunnel vision”) and glare sensitivity
- Later: reduced central and colour vision
- progress differs widely between people, even in the same family
Diagnosis and Genetic Testing
A retina specialist will usually advise a dilated examination, OCT imaging, visual field testing and electroretinography (ERG). Genetic testing and counselling matter because a few gene-specific therapies exist and many trials recruit by gene type.
Established Care vs Investigational Treatment
| Category | Status | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Regular monitoring, cataract surgery, treatment of macular swelling | Standard of care | Follow-up with a retina specialist |
| Low vision rehabilitation | Standard of care | Magnifiers, lighting, screen-reading tools, mobility training |
| Gene therapy for RPE65-related disease | Approved in some countries; confirm availability in India | Needs genetic confirmation and specialist assessment |
| Stem cell therapy for retinitis pigmentosa | Investigational. Permitted only within approved clinical research | Research on stem cell-derived retinal cells and protective factors |
Stem Cell Research in Retinitis Pigmentosa
Studies are testing stem cell-derived retinal cells and mesenchymal stem cells that may release protective factors. Most are small and early, and results so far do not show a proven cure or a reliable way to restore lost vision. See our page on retinitis pigmentosa for our approach, and read the guidelines below before considering any procedure.
Regulation and Approvals: What the Rules Say
In India, stem cell use outside approved indications is classified as investigational under the National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, 2017 (ICMR and DBT). The Health Ministry’s September 2026 advisory on regulation of stem cell therapy repeats that routine use is limited to approved indications. In practice this means a patient should be offered such treatment only as part of approved clinical research, with written informed consent.
- Ethics committee approval is required for investigational use.
- CDSCO permission applies to clinical trials of stem cell-derived products.
- Trials should be listed on the Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI).
- The National Medical Commission expects doctors not to market unproven treatment as established care.
Because regulations change, verify the latest position on the official websites listed below.
Why Eye Procedures Need Extra Caution
The retina and optic nerve are delicate and cannot be replaced. Doctors have documented severe, permanent vision loss after unregulated stem cell injections into the eye, which is why approvals matter more here than almost anywhere else in medicine. Insist on an approved clinical protocol, a qualified ophthalmologist or retina surgeon, ethics approval and informed consent, and tell your regular eye doctor about any plan before you proceed.
What Affects the Cost?
The total depends on pre-treatment investigations, the type of cells and how they are processed, how many sessions are planned, the length of stay, and travel. India is generally more affordable than many Western countries, but be wary of unusually low or guaranteed-result packages. Always request an itemised written estimate.
Questions to Ask Before You Decide
- Is this part of an approved protocol, and can you show the registration number?
- Who will perform the procedure, and what is their eye-surgery experience?
- What are the risks to my remaining vision?
- How will results be measured, and by whom?
- What exactly is included in the cost, in writing?
- Will my own eye specialist be kept informed?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is retinitis pigmentosa curable?
Most forms are not, though a few gene-specific therapies exist. Care aims to protect function.
Is stem cell treatment for RP approved in India?
Not as routine treatment. It is investigational and permitted only within approved clinical research.
Can stem cells restore night vision?
There is no reliable evidence of this. Be cautious of such promises.
Should I get genetic testing?
Yes, where possible. It clarifies the type, family risk and eligibility for trials.
Are vitamin supplements useful?
Evidence is limited. Discuss any supplement with your retina specialist first.
Final Word
Retinitis pigmentosa care is built on early diagnosis, genetic testing, complication management and low vision support. Stem cell research is active but unproven. Verify approvals, ask for documents and keep your own retina specialist involved.
